Thanks to the "Tianhe-2", a team led by Shaw Man-wah, a professor of chemical and biological engineering at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and dean of the HKUST Energy Research Institute, has developed a new hydrogen fuel cell, setting a world record for the durability of the battery to generate electricity. Hydrogen fuel cells are less harmful to the environment, but they have never been commercialized on a large scale. The reason is that hydrogen fuel cells rely on electrocatalysts to generate electricity, but catalysts are generally made of platinum (Pt), which is not only expensive but also rare. Scientists have been trying to find more common and inexpensive substances such as iron-nitrogen-carbon as alternatives to platinum, but these substances have poor catalytic power generation efficiency and durability. Relying on the rich storage resources and powerful computing power of "Tianhe-2", the team simulated the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) on the surface of the new mixed catalyst, used density functional theory (DFT) to prove that its catalytic performance is superior to platinum, and finally developed a new hydrogen fuel cell, which greatly reduced the amount of platinum required by the catalyst by 80%. This new mixed catalyst not only has extremely low platinum content, but its catalytic efficiency remains at 97% after 100,000 voltage cycles of accelerated stress testing. The research team of Professor Zhang Xin of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and the Hong Kong Institute of Sport collaborated to study the aerodynamic characteristics of the cycling process using advanced computational fluid dynamics (CFD) methods through the "Tianhe-2" supercomputer. In the calculation, the overall wind resistance was evaluated and optimized based on factors such as wind speed, cycling attitude, bicycle parts, and wheel rotation, and validated and supplemented with the wind tunnel experimental measurements, which effectively promoted the athlete’s posture optimization, equipment design, and selection process. The simulation calculation also provided the flow field distribution of different parts of the body, assisted in clothing design and material selection, and was combined with the wind tunnel experiment. As a result, Hong Kong cyclist Li Huishi improved her training efficiency and competition results, and won a valuable bronze medal in the women’s track cycling competition at the Tokyo Olympic Games.
