Hydrogen fuel cells are less harmful to the environment, but they have never been commercialized on a large scale. The reason is that hydrogen fuel cells rely on electrocatalysts to generate electricity, but catalysts are generally made of platinum (Pt), which is not only expensive but also rare. Scientists have been trying to find more common and inexpensive substances such as iron-nitrogen-carbon as alternatives to platinum, but these substances have poor catalytic power generation efficiency and durability.
