On January 18, Huawei announced that HarmonyOS NEXT Hongmeng Galaxy Edition (i.e. Developer Preview Edition) is officially open for application, and plans to launch a developer beta version with more complete features in the second quarter. By the fourth quarter, HarmonyOS NEXT will also launch a commercial version.

Huawei started the pre-research of Hongmeng system in 2015, and has since launched HarmonyOS versions 1.0 to 4.0 one after another. In order to ensure daily use by users, Hongmeng’s user versions so far are compatible with Android.

Due to the scarcity of Hongmeng engineers in the early stage of ecology, the salary of related positions is generally high. According to Maimai platform information, the monthly salary given by Meituan Hongmeng infrastructure engineers is between 40,000 and 60,000 yuan. Huawei has cooperated 305 universities and 286 companies to conduct relevant course training, and said that in the future, it will train 100,000 Hongmeng developers every month.

When traffic costs are high, the mobile market no longer needs an operating system dominated by traffic bidding rankings, but a more intelligent and full-scenario platform. This is Hongmeng’s opportunity, but whether it can form a long-term prosperous ecosystem that benefits both developers and users is also its challenge for a long time.

Huawei has made a definition internally. For an operating system ecosystem, software usage and market share are the core factors for its survival and success. 16% market share is a life-and-death line, and this year will also be a critical year to determine whether Hongmeng can cross this line.
